Institutional Research

Institutional Research - Companies

I did this to show where my music video would be seen to show that it is suitable for the real world and will look convincing to the audience. This also shows that I have done research into the institution that I am making the music video for, I have done a detailed research of a company that I think could show my music video.

Island Records

Who are they?

Island records are a record company that produce and have artists such as Florence and the Machine, Bob Marley, Ben Howard, Jack Johnson, James Morrison etc. These are the artist that they have that is closest to the genre of the song for my music video. Island records may have there own website and seen to exist as there own company but they don’t they are now a subsidiary company meaning that are now joint with Universal Records.

What kind of texts do they produce?

Island records produce videos for the artists music that are then shown on music channels on TV and online. Along with this they also produce the album artwork for the albums. They get there budget for each artist from Universal and the more successful and artist becomes the bigger the budget. The have created a website for Island records (see above) with things such as list of artists, gigs, island TV etc.

Where will my text exist in the real world?

My text in the ‘real world’ would exist on music channels on TV. The channels that I think my music video would be shown on are VIVA, 4Music, T4, MTV, Freshly Squeezed and E4. I think that it will be shown on these channels as it is song and video that I could see in the charts so it would be shown on chart shows on this channel.

The song is mainstream, kind of old song that could be re released with a new video. I think that music video have benefited the music industry as it give the artists a chance to market themselves as a brand not just there music but they can get across how they want to be represented and what sort of music they are creating with the help of a visual.

The opportunities to have my music video shown online and other places other than TV are greatly increases in the modern say with more and more technology. Being able to have music videos shown online means that it is passed around more easily and shown world wide not just in the UK.

If I was commissioned to make a music video/Ad campaign for Island Records I would…

1. My text is very similar as in it have the same sort of music as what Island Records produces and some of the videos that they make. In addition, my text will have (like Island Records) the artist featured in the video at some point with a guitar in a plain setting singing the lyrics.

2. I think that my text looks like a real product as I have young attractive girl in it that you would expect to see in a music video. Also, the stunning locations that I have chosen have helped in my text looking very convincing as music video.

3. I think my text is best for them as it links well with the artist style and looks very pretty and could been seen on a music channel. The concept of the video is very emotional and will spark a reaction from the audience.

4. If I had a budget for my music video I would use it to get shows such as high angle over the location by using a helicopter. In addition, i would have more location featured and more countries not just the UK in my video, I would fly my character out to places like the Caribbean to create more beautiful locations.

Why would my Music Video work?

I think that my music video would work as a real media product and Island Records would want to represent is as my artist is a new artist 'Toby Greenford'. I think this would work to my advantage as a business product I have created a professional looking album package and magazine advert to show the artist and his music. He is a west country artist so a lot of people will relate to him as a normal guy that loves his music. I really think that the whole business package that I have created will look attractive to a label like Island records with the new fresh sounds, the interesting and personal plot of the music video, along with the continuity of all the tasks together show that it is complete package and would be successful.

I have learnt a lot from this task as I have seen where my music video can be shown and what sort of companies are out there to put money behind the project and where the real world.  This has helped me in my research task of my project as it made me truly think of where my product would been seen in the real world.

I really liked researching this and having ideas on what I would have done to make my music video better gave me more imagination and made me think of things that are possibly for me to and shots that I could use like the one where the character is going up the stairs and it is a complete close up (she is holding the camera).

Photos & Video - Order

Photos - Order the girl will find them...

I did this to show in my music video what the idea is and what the order the girl in the video will find them. This makes it clear what the story is behind my video and shows the link to the song lyrics. The images are a running theme through my music video and show the characters journey through life and how things have effected her. It makes the video very personal and it is as it is my story and it did really happen and the image are of me. I am hoping that the as it is an emotional story that this is conveyed through the music video and these pictures. I have also used clips of my baby video for some range in the film.

1st - This picture is of the mother before she meets the father or the girl in the video.

2nd - This is a photo of the father before he meets the mother of the girl in the video.

3rd - This photo is of the wedding of the mum and dad and how happy that they were.

4th - Photo of the first born child and the mother.

5th - Photo of the child and the father.

6th - Photo of them all together as a happy family.

7th - This is the last photo of the mother and father in happier times, and this is then split apart from the each other signifying the divorce.

Same photo - with extra prop/photo to do with the song (song lyrics and name of song. This is split up now to signify the divorce.

Extra Photo - This is the extra thing to do with the lyrics behind the split photo.

Video: Clip from when I was a baby and I was sat with my mum talking to her and my dad filming
Video: Show time when I was with my Dad before the divource.

I learnt from doing this what the order of my photos will go in and how this will look effective. This made me really excited as it looks really good and really links well with the meaning of the song and something that is close to me. With the use of the photos and the videos this gives my own little personal touch that is not usally seen in music video and I found from the audience feedback that these are very successful and look very effective and make the video more interesting and emotional.

Analysis of Lyrics - Skinny Love

Lyrics to Skinny Love

I did this to show what the lyrics mean and how this has influenced my choice in what I am doing in my music video.

I think this helped me in thinking of my idea as it links really well to the meaning and goes together.
The Lyrics:

Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer
What I think it means?

I personally think that the lyrics means that the love was strong at the beginning and for a while between two people but then the love had faded and become weak (skinny). This linking into my idea for my music video was the girl is finding out and revisiting memories from her past and how her parents love became 'skinny' and they divorced. I have linked the the tone of the song the sadness and put it into my music video.

THE LYRICS:

But it will be a different "kind"
I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines

Come on skinny love what happened here
Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Sullen load is full; so slow on the split

I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
Now all your love is wasted?
Then who the hell was I?
Now I'm breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines

Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far be
Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer

I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in the moment this order's tall

I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
In the morning I'll be with you
But it will be a different "kind"
I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines

Come on skinny love what happened here
Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Sullen load is full; so slow on the split

I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
Now all your love is wasted?
Then who the hell was I?
Now I'm breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines

Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?

Slicethepie.com research on Lyrics:

This is a link to the website to show you that it is a genuine music website and these people answering my questions are my target audience. ---> http://www.slicethepie.com/

My Question: The question that I asked was what they thought the lyrics meant of the song?

My Answer: Love that's fading away so fast it's gone 'skinny'.

The research above confirmed my thoughts on what the song means and is confirmed the target audience and how they think the same things as me. However, this was the only reply that I got which is disappointing and showed that maybe people weren't able to answer the question that I asked.

Regulating Bodies Reasearch

OFCOM GUIDELINES:

I did this to show what are the rules that I have to stick to while making decisions about the content of my music video. I have to do this to make sure my music video is suitable for the target audience and isn't offensive or rude for younger viewers.

What is OFCOM?

OFCOM stands for the “Office of Communications”. It is an organisation that regulates TV and radio sectors, ensuring people who watch TV and listen to the radio are protected from harmful or offensive material. OFCOM also protects people from being treated unfairly in television and radio shows.

Under 18s – sexual content, drugs and language

OFCOM feel it is very important to protect under 18’s from harmful and offensive material. They understand that younger viewers can be easily influenced by what they watch on TV so have created laws that programme makers must abide by.They believe that programme makers should always consider the impact that the representation of the use of illegal drugs, the abuse of drugs, smoking, solvent abuse and the misuse of alcohol, may have on younger viewers.

Violence

OFCOM also regulate the amount of violence that can be shown within a programme. They are concerned in areas with the use of accessible domestic implements such as knives, or other offensive weapons.

Offensive language

Also an area of concern for OFCOM. They understand that it is a feature of British life and in certain contexts it has an appropriate place in broadcasting. However, there is a concern with the harm it may have to young children who may be watching. There is a concern that children may imitate this offensive language even when their parents or carers have told them it is wrong. A variety of music videos are watched by children. However, OFCOM are concerned where song lyrics may cause offence, and ask broadcasters too possibly use track remixes or edits. Some videos will only be shown after watershed if OFCOM believe the video will cause serious harm and offence to young watchers.

Under 18’s – employed in film/video

OFCOM takes extreme caution and has rules that all broadcasters must comply with if any under eighteen appears in or participates in a programme. Broadcasters must always take into consideration the child’s welfare. If a participant is under sixteen, OFCOM asks broadcasters to ensure that there is consent from a parent, guardian or other person over eighteen. When given consent by parents or guardians, OFCOM believe it is the broadcaster’s duty to make sure the parent understands the full implications of their child’s participation. Programme makers are told to highlight both the positive and negative likely outcomes from participating in programme.

Flashing Images

Flashing images can cause seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. This is why OFCOM have specific guidelines for broadcasters who use flashing images in their programme. OFCOM say that all broadcasters should give a clear warning before the programme starts that flashing images may occur.

My Music Video

In my music video I am not planning on showing sexual content, drug use or violence in my text so these guidelines do not apply I have looked through them though rally and if my idea changes I may have to look at them again. The song that I have chosen doesn’t have any offensive language or anything that goes against the OFCOM guidelines. However, I will be using under 18’s in my video, so I will have to ensure that no harm can be done when filming. Also, I am using an under 16 for my video but getting permission should not be problem as the under 16 is my younger sister.

The things that I have learnt...

- Seeing that in quite alot of music videos there are flashing images and there are guidelines I am just not going to use these.

- I have learnt that there are guidelines on using under 18's in my video without the correct permission. I have planned on using a an under 18 but as she is my sister I have got the permission and she will not be exposed to any inappropriate material.

- I know that I cannot show any violence, with things like knives or offensive weapons.

I learnt from this what the precise guidelines are and what I have to include. This helped me to look at the content of my music video and really look at it in detail. The guidelines really help me in understanding what I am aloud to show and all of the things I am not aloud to show in the video I am not showing any drugs, sex, violence and I have the permission from the mother of the under 18 to be used in my video as she is my sister.

I have learnt from this that sometimes things take longer or a shorter time that I originally thought and I had to change some of the above. It just proves to me that to keep on top of things time management is very important.

I have not filled in the rest of this as the time scales on this were quite unpredictable and some tasks were on and off due to people being away so I have not stuck to this but this shows what the times a though they would take and that things take a lot more time than originally though. However, everything is still on track and this just shows that I am planning and thinking about time and what I need to do within the time.
